THE END AND THE BEGINNING!! With Scorpion Clan Coup we arrive at the end of the Clan War era of the game, the original story arc; and also to the beginning, as it was a prequel set in the past. In this set we get the Scorpion Clan before it was forced to go into hiding after their coup against throne, and the Akodo family before it was disbanded because of the failure of their Lord to protect the Emperor. Also we get cards of younger (with the Inexperienced trait) versions of the heroes and villains, as well as information of the event that led to the fall of the Hantei Dynasty!
This set was spread along three small different releases (or «episodes») in three consecutive months (December, 1997 to February, 1998), being the first to use the novel -and short-lived- Rolling Thunder(TM) distribution method. Episode 1 to 3 had booster boxes, and Episodes 1 and 3 (but not 2) had also a «combo box», including both boosters and several copies of the starter (Scorpion for Episode 1, Lion for Episode 3). Because of the flattened rarity system there are few chase cards in the set, and those few that exist do no reach a high price.
Considering all three episodes as a single set, the card count is 153 new cards, plus 47 starter-fixed reprints. No variants noticed.
How to tell apart a SCC card?
The SCC is a really distinctive one: red lightning on a black background. The only other one you could mix it up with would be The Spirit Wars (red leaf-like forms on black), but it’s not even close.
